French Onion Soup

Warm up with the cheesiest version of this family favorite. Their hearts will melt with the warmth and richness of homemade French Onion Soup topped with miraculously melty Kraft Signature Mozzarella Blend cheese and the toasty crunch of French bread.

What You Need

  • 2 Tbsp. butter
  • 2 Tbsp. olive oil
  • 3 lb. yellow onions, cut lengthwise in half, then crosswise into thin slices
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 4 sprigs fresh thyme
  • 1/4 cup dry sherry
  • 1-3/4 qt. (7 cups) fat-free reduced-sodium beef broth
  • 2 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 Tbsp. apple cider vinegar
  • 16 French bread slices (1/2 inch thick), toasted
  • 1 pkg. (8 oz.) KRAFT Signature Mozzarella Blend Shredded Cheese

Let’s Make It

  1. Melt butter with oil in Dutch oven on medium-high heat. Add onions; cook 10 min. or until tender, stirring frequently. Simmer on medium-low heat 1 hour or until onions are golden brown, stirring occasionally and adding garlic and thyme for the last 5 min.
  2. Stir in sherry; cook and stir on medium-high heat 1 min. Add beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, vinegar; stir. Bring to boil, stirring occasionally. Cover, simmer on medium-low heat 20 min., stirring occasionally. Remove and discard thyme sprigs.
  3. Heat broiler. Ladle soup into 8 ovenproof bowls; top with toast slices and cheese.
  4. Broil, 4 inches from heat, 3 to 5 min. or until cheese is melted and golden brown.

Kitchen Tips

  • To make ahead, prepare soup as directed; cool, then refrigerate up to 2 days. When ready to serve, bring soup to a boil. Ladle into ovenproof bowls and continue as directed.
